We Think We Know the Creature's Name!
Dear Ron,
We think we solved the mystery!
Here are the clues:
It is a cousin to a clam & octopus.
It has 8 plates; 2 are smaller.
It is an invertebrate - no backbone.
It is a Mollusk.
The Trumpet Shell is a cousin.
The plates are part of its outer shell.
You called them armor. You gave us another clue in your picture. The Sea Creature
lives near a rocky beach.

I found a picture of a Chiton in a shell book. We read about it and the clues fit!Is this a Chiton?

You are good sea detectives!
Yes, the creature I sent is a Chiton. I will send you a whole one so you can
see how the shells fit together.
Mystery Sea Creature Number 1 is the Mossy Chiton. Its eight shells are just visible and are very worn from age and from being scraped by logs and rocks in its difficult living place. It is surrounded by small barnacles, over which it can't move very well. Its sides are soft and covered with its own moss-like body. Some seaweeds also grow on the shell and body, helping to hide it on the rock.
All Best, Ron
I will add a web URL soon of more photos and web pages that are helping us learn more about our sea creature friends. Be watching for this web address.
