Look What Else I Found on the Beach...

Tonight when I walked along the beach, I picked up a broken fishing net, a
lot of plastic bottles, some cigarette lighters, a golf ball, and a lot of
styrofoam. It is sad to see this end up on the beach and to see it floating
on the waves where it can do serious harm to some animals.

Why would people pollute? It doesn't help the earth one bit!

We think that if someone pollutes, they should get arrested.
Does that ever happen?

The people who threw them are not responsible. We are lucky you found these things. They could have killed the fish, the
mollusks, the whales, and all of the other sea creatures!

Why did those people throw those things on the beach and in the ocean? Do kids litter too?

You ask some very good questions that are not very easy to answer.

I think that most people on our earth still think that the ocean is a place that can not be polluted and so, they throw things into the sea.

Dawson,

I have been thinking about your very thoughtful question. Most polluters do not get arrested. Some do, but not very many.

I spend a lot of time working with kids in Ohio on projects in the out of doors. Some of those projects are funded with money that the State of Ohio collects by, not arresting, but fining polluters. I think this is a good thing they do in Ohio. Polluters have to pay money to schools so teachers and others can help find ways of protecting the environment.
